Like most people I am trying to lower my electric bill. I nag the family about turning off the lights and use compact fluorescent bulbs where ever possible. When it comes to changing people's behavior, there is nothing better than feedback. I stumbled across Blue Line Innovations while reading The Sunday Boston Globe. They have a product called PowerCost Monitor which allows you to see how much electricity you are using and how much it is costing you per hour. It is that last part which is really neat, it brings forward the cost of turning on the lights into real terms that kids can understand. The device costs $150, but if you are an NStar Massachusetts customer it costs only $30 until the end of June. You can order it here. It is simple to install, and you can get your kids to participate in energy savings by providing incentives, such as toys, for meeting home conservation goals. |

Interesting timing of your post, I was just complaining to myself about how my kids have NO clue about the wastefulness of engery. They leave their bedroom lights on ALL the time. Outside I discovered that the hose was left on for 2 days - with a nozzle on, but it was still leaking at the spigot-hose connection. I would really like to make more of an effort to reduce our carbon inprint and make our home more "green". |
